Linux or Windows Starter Edition

Paul (200.172.107.57) -

Windows "starter edition" is something I almost made the mistake of buying (for nearly $100) because I wanted to install a legit version of windows on a new PC I bought and XP wasn't on the shelves of any of the stores I looked in.

Fortunately, I did some search to find out exactly what this "starter edition" is all about.

The goal seems to be an opportunity to help providing computing to those in less fortunate countries at an affordable price.

Of course comparing the price of windows starter edition to the wages many earn, "affordable" isn't part of the equation.

Linux on the other hand, fits the definition of "affordable" and since it may require a steeper learning curve will help those "less fortunate" countries develope a more capable popular.

I would also propose that for one that had never used a computer before, it would be no more difficult to learn Linux than Windows.

And, once they become fluent (with either), Linux wouldn't offer the limitations (such as 3 programs) that Windows "starter edition" does.

I agree with you, but linux might be a little bit complicated for first timers, the "propaganda" that windows has makes it very popular, so im affraid that, even with the prices, new computer users start with windows.

Exactly, and it's too bad. That "little complicated" can be either tremendous frustration or a good learning experience.

Of course if a new computer came preloaded with linux it probably wouldn't be any more complicated than windows to get started:

Click on the browser and your online!

It could even be a bit less complicated as it is less likely a user will unintentionally break the system (ie: deleteing operating system files) which is so easily done in windows.

Its actually a type of choice intraction. If you are going to start a server business or going to run a server then there are no other better option then linux. Linux is open source and much more good than windows. But windows starter preferable to the guys who are actually non-geeks :) Although its just my imagination about windows as i never used Windows starter edition.

Regards

From what you said, Windows Starter Edition sounds like a real bad idea. It is very unfair to limit user of your computer like that. I'd go with linux.
