| Answers: I now have a physical server, what are my options? I have recently came into possesion of a IBM xSeries 335 DUAL P4 XEON 2.4Ghz 512Mb RAM 1U Server, I don't like the idea of hosting my site, or soon to be site, on an external source, although i am fine with the domain being externally routed to me. I was wanting to know, what OS should I use with this server and its basically just for personal use, i have the option of putting any version of windows and linux on the machine due to my accumulation of software discs. I know that linux is more secure due to the fact that there are less viruses, threats, etc targeted toward it, but i like the the vast amount of programs that run on windows. of course i am new to this otherwise i wouldn't be asking these questions. I now some basic programming and i was going to use this server as a way to experiment and possibly help me learn more. so pretty much all that i am asking is what should i do with this server? first off, that is what i am asking, is for a website that has good information, and two i mean web hosting applications, i'd rather not dedicate the entire pc to just web hosting, i would like it to be able to run windows version of xbmc, and use a program similar to HFS(http file server). security right now isn't my utmost priority, to be able to actually have web-hosting capability weather local for now or until i get a domain. and basically i am doing this to learn. and i would like to some similar things to what answerer number two is doing |
